Have you ever caught a whiff of freshly baked cookies or heard that one song that used to play on repeat during your teenage years? Suddenly, you’re whisked back in time, reliving that moment with all its sights, sounds, and emotions. This enchanting phenomenon is known as state-dependent memory, where our past experiences come rushing back to life, as vivid as the moment they first happened. But let’s take this idea one step further and explore the captivating concept of position-dependent memory.

Research reveals that during intense emotional experiences—especially those linked to trauma—we create deep-seated memories that often linger in the shadows of our minds. Our bodies are clever protectors, storing these memories below the surface to shield us from pain. This is where memory dissociation, or reversible amnesia, steps in. When we find ourselves in a specific emotional or physical state, those hidden memories can resurface, unveiling insights that were previously out of reach.

Have you ever noticed how your body naturally wants to shift or move while you’re practicing self-care or in a treatment session? That’s completely normal and exactly what your body craves! Allowing these natural movements helps our tissues relax and begin the healing process. Yet, tied to these positions may be memories, emotions, or beliefs that bubble up to the surface. This newfound awareness empowers us to confront what was once hidden, helping us understand the patterns that may have been holding us back. These aren’t there to hurt you so remember to use your breath to connect into the feelings.

By bringing these memories into the light, we create a nurturing space for healing. We can finally decipher what those old holding patterns were trying to protect us from. As we release the tension in our bodies and emotions, we cultivate an environment ripe for change—one that is consistent, safe, and profoundly effective.

Deepening Our Healing

It’s all too easy to react when uncomfortable feelings or sensations arise. This instinctive response is our body’s way of signaling that there’s something we need to heal or a deeply rooted belief system worth exploring. It’s an invitation to tune in and deepen our healing journey.

I guide individuals in this process through three simple steps to tackle their triggers, as outlined in my article “Learn to Respond, NOT React.” If you’re ready to take the plunge and learn my three-step process, click here!

So, let’s embrace this journey of awareness, where mind and body dance together in harmony, unlocking the door to healing and transformation.
